Children Enjoy Christmas Party at the State Theatre
Christmas was always a special time in Sandwich.
Downtown stores decorated their windows, churches prepared holiday programs, and families gathered to celebrate the season. For many local children, one of the highlights of Christmas week was a visit to the State Theatre.
A Special Afternoon

Children arriving at the State Theatre’s Christmas party in December 1950 were greeted by Santa Claus, received candy treats, and enjoyed a special holiday movie. Newspaper reports noted that a capacity crowd filled the theater for the event.
On December 28, 1950, the State Theatre hosted a Christmas party for Sandwich youngsters.
According to newspaper reports, a capacity crowd filled the theater for the special event sponsored by Mr. and Mrs. Paul Sweeney. Children arriving at the theater were greeted by Santa Claus and received a treat of candy before enjoying the afternoon’s entertainment.
The event proved so popular that every seat in the theater was filled.
More Than Movies
The State Theatre served as Sandwich’s principal movie house for many years, but it was also an important gathering place for the community.
In addition to showing motion pictures, the theater hosted amateur nights, contests, holiday celebrations, children’s programs, and special events. These activities helped make the theater a familiar part of life for generations of Sandwich residents.
The Christmas party of 1950 was one example of how the theater became woven into the traditions of the town.
A Visit from Santa
For many youngsters, meeting Santa Claus was the highlight of the afternoon.
The newspaper account noted that Santa greeted children as they entered the theater before they settled into their seats. Combined with candy and a holiday movie, the event offered a memorable experience for Sandwich families during the Christmas season.
Events such as these remind us that local theaters once served as community centers as much as entertainment venues.
Remembering a Community Tradition
The State Theatre has long since disappeared from Railroad Street, but memories of its holiday programs remain part of Sandwich history.
For one afternoon in December 1950, the theater was transformed into a place of Christmas excitement, where children gathered with friends, met Santa Claus, enjoyed a movie, and celebrated the season together.
It was one more way the State Theatre brought the community together.
