A Window Into Everyday Life in Sandwich, Illinois

Long before social media, community calendars, or online business pages, local advertisements helped tell the story of a town.

These pages from the 1928 Sandwich High School Reflector offer a remarkable snapshot of everyday life in Sandwich, Illinois, the businesses people visited, the services they depended on, and the merchants who supported local students and school activities nearly a century ago.

Some names are still familiar today. Others have faded quietly into history. But together, these advertisements recreate the rhythm of downtown Sandwich in the late 1920s:

  • theaters and garages
  • grocery stores and bakeries
  • ice cream parlors and drug stores
  • furniture dealers and photographers
  • banks, dairies, jewelers, plumbers, and funeral directors

The pages also preserve something even more personal, playful student snippets, handwritten patron signatures, and small details that remind us these were real people living ordinary lives in a growing Midwestern town.

In many ways, this collection reads less like advertising and more like a walk through Sandwich itself in 1928.

“Photographs Live Forever”

One of the most striking ads in the collection belongs to the Sandwich Photo Shop, reminding students that:

“Photographs Live Forever”

Nearly a century later, they were right.

Tiny Phone Numbers, Small-Town Life

Scattered throughout the ads are wonderfully small telephone numbers:

  • Phone 1
  • Phone 5
  • Phone 20
  • Phone 99

Without saying a word, those numbers reveal the scale of Sandwich at the time, a close knit community where businesses, customers, and families all knew one another.

Businesses That Supported the Community

These pages also quietly document the relationship between local businesses and Sandwich schools.

The merchants who purchased advertising space helped make the Reflector possible, supporting student activities while promoting their businesses to the community.

The final pages even include a handwritten “Patrons” section filled with local names and signatures, a remarkable surviving snapshot of civic support in 1928 Sandwich.
