A. Adams & Sons was the original manufacturing firm established in Sandwich, Illinois, in 1856 by Augustus Adams following the relocation of his business from Elgin. From this enterprise grew the industrial operation that would later be incorporated as the Sandwich Manufacturing Company—one of the most significant manufacturing concerns in northern Illinois.
The firm marked the beginning of large-scale industry in Sandwich and played a central role in placing the town’s name on agricultural machinery distributed across the United States and abroad.
Origins in Elgin and Move to Sandwich
Before coming to Sandwich, Augustus Adams had already established a successful foundry and machine shop in Elgin, Illinois, where he manufactured agricultural implements and continued developing mechanical innovations.
In 1856, encouraged by fellow legislator William Patten and influenced by the arrival of the Burlington Railroad, Adams moved his operations to Sandwich. The new location offered improved transportation access, allowing machinery to be shipped more efficiently to expanding markets across the Midwest.
With this move, A. Adams & Sons was established.
The Partnership
Augustus Adams established A. Adams & Sons in 1856 following his move to Sandwich, with his sons Darius and Henry actively assisting in the early operation of the business.
In 1861, his son Joseph Phelps Adams joined the firm after gaining business experience in Chicago and Michigan, strengthening the company’s financial and administrative operations.
Manufacturing and Growth
A. Adams & Sons began with the production of self-feeding corn shellers, a key innovation that helped establish the firm’s reputation. As demand increased, the company expanded its line to include additional agricultural machinery, adapting to the needs of farmers across a rapidly developing region.
The success of these products led to steady growth in both production and workforce. By the early 1860s, the firm had already become a significant employer in Sandwich, helping to shape the town’s emerging industrial identity.
Toward Incorporation (1867)
As the business expanded, the need for a more formal corporate structure became clear. In 1867, A. Adams & Sons was reorganized and incorporated as the Sandwich Manufacturing Company.
At the time of incorporation, Augustus Adams and his sons Darius, Joseph Phelps, and Henry Adams were the principal partners and largest shareholders in the enterprise.
This transition did not represent a break, but rather an evolution—carrying forward the same leadership, experience, and family involvement into a larger and more structured organization.
While Augustus Adams would later leave Sandwich in 1870 to establish the Marseilles Manufacturing Company with his younger sons, and Darius Adams died in 1872, the firm remained under the steady leadership of his sons. J. Phelps Adams served as Secretary and Treasurer and board member until his death in 1904, while Henry A. Adams served as Superintendent until his retirement in 1910 and continued as a board member until his death in 1917.
The founding partnership of A. Adams & Sons thus became the foundation upon which the Sandwich Manufacturing Company was built.
Legacy
Though the name A. Adams & Sons would eventually be replaced, its importance remains central to the history of Sandwich.
It represents:
- the beginning of manufacturing in the town
- the collaboration of a family enterprise
- the transition from small-scale workshop production to industrial manufacturing
From this partnership came not only a successful business, but a lasting industrial identity for Sandwich, Illinois.
