“Located along Railroad Street in the heart of Sandwich’s historic downtown, Veterans Park offers visitors a quiet place to pause while exploring the city’s historic district.”
Veterans Park, located at 151 East Railroad Street in downtown Sandwich, serves as a place of remembrance and community gathering. The large open gazebo stands as the focal point of the park.
Constructed in 1978, the gazebo was dedicated to the memory of Virginia Hood, a former Sandwich Park District board member whose service helped shape the community’s park system. Over the years, the structure has hosted a wide variety of local events, including the annual Memorial Day ceremony, Sandwich Freedom Days celebrations, and Indian Valley Theater classes. The gazebo has also provided a picturesque setting for several area weddings.
Veterans Park is also home to several memorial features honoring members of the community. These include an antique streetlight donated in memory of Michael Paul Pruski, a memorial stone recognizing veterans of past wars, and an inscribed marble bench placed in the park in 2001 by the Sandwich American Legion and Auxiliary in honor of Lester Hage.
Today the park remains both a place of reflection and a welcoming green space within Sandwich’s historic downtown district..
