Civil War Veterans Reunite in Sandwich

In the decades following the Civil War, Sandwich remained closely connected to the men who had left the town to serve in the Union army. As the years passed, veterans gathered periodically to renew old friendships, remember fallen comrades, and reflect on the experiences that had shaped their lives. One such gathering brought a large number of former soldiers to Sandwich for a reunion that combined remembrance, ceremony, and celebration.

Newspaper accounts describe the arrival of veterans from across northern Illinois, many of them members of the 105th Illinois Infantry and other Union regiments. As visiting soldiers reached the city, they were greeted by local citizens and escorted through the business streets in a welcoming procession. Leading the parade was the Sandwich Union Band, whose brass instruments filled the air with patriotic music as the veterans marched together once again.

The reunion included speeches, music, and informal gatherings among the old soldiers. A cannon salute marked the opening of the festivities, and members of the Grand Army of the Republic joined local residents in welcoming the visitors. Many of the veterans remained in Sandwich overnight, camping on the grounds and sharing stories of the war and of the years that had followed.

Events like this reunion were common in the late nineteenth century as Civil War veterans sought opportunities to reconnect with former comrades. For the town of Sandwich, such gatherings were occasions of pride and reflection. The soldiers who had once departed for distant battlefields returned as honored guests, greeted by music, ceremony, and the gratitude of the community they had served.

Though decades had passed since the guns of the Civil War had fallen silent, reunions such as this one demonstrated that the memory of the conflict remained a powerful part of local life. In Sandwich, as in many American towns, the legacy of the war continued to be remembered through the stories, friendships, and traditions of the veterans who had lived through it.
