Captain Lindsay H. Carr

(1822–1862)
Mexican War Veteran • Civil War Officer • Early Sandwich Merchant

Captain Lindsay H. Carr was one of the most significant early citizens of Sandwich, Illinois — a merchant, railroad advocate, and military leader whose life bridged the town’s founding and its Civil War sacrifice.

Early Leadership in Sandwich

By the early 1850s, Carr was among the farmers and citizens who helped petition the railroad company to establish a station at what would become Sandwich. Alongside William Patten and Washington Walker, he participated in efforts that secured the depot and encouraged settlement and commerce in the growing village.

In 1853, Carr and his brother opened the first general store in Sandwich, helping supply the young community during its formative years.

Mexican War Veteran

Before the Civil War, Carr had already served his country as a veteran of the Mexican War, earning the respect of his neighbors as a man of experience and discipline.

Raising Sandwich’s First Company – 1861

In April 1861, after the fall of Fort Sumter and President Abraham Lincoln’s call for volunteers, the citizens of Sandwich gathered in a local hall to respond.

Captain Carr stepped forward and placed his name at the top of an enlistment paper, inviting others to join him in service. Many men and boys followed.

Within days, he was elected captain of the company. The women of Sandwich prepared a flag and uniforms for the departing soldiers.

On April 23, 1861, the men left their homes and families for army life.

Carr was mustered as Captain of Company H, 10th Illinois Infantry.

Service and Death

Company H saw action in Missouri. On March 12, 1862, at the engagement near New Madrid, Missouri, Captain Carr was shot while posting pickets.

He was struck once in the head and once in the chest.

He died in action at age 40.

An obituary described him as:

“a true soldier every inch of him.”

A report noted he was
“shot by a secession scoundrel.”

His death marked one of Sandwich’s earliest battlefield losses.
