Almon Gage was among the principal land owners and early builders of early Sandwich and one of the most consequential figures in its formative years. Through land ownership, civic contribution, and strategic foresight, he helped shape the physical and economic foundations of the town.
Born June 1, 1804, in Sudbury, Vermont, Gage later settled in western New York before coming west to Illinois in 1844. Upon arriving in the newly formed Somonauk Township region, he secured substantial acreage through private purchase and federal land entry, ultimately holding several hundred acres upon which the future town would rise.
When the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad surveyed through the area in 1851, Gage gave five acres of his land for depot construction and laid out portions of his property into town lots. The town was formally platted in December 1854. At one point it was proposed that the village be named “Almon” in his honor, but Gage declined the distinction. The settlement was first known as Newark Station before adopting the name Sandwich in 1856.
Gage also donated land for the erection of the Sandwich Steam Mill in 1856, an early industrial enterprise that became one of the town’s enduring landmarks.
Careful and methodical in business, Gage accumulated property through disciplined management and sold lots as settlement increased. By the time of his death on May 10, 1880, he was described as one of the wealthiest and most highly esteemed citizens of Sandwich.
A later residence built for him in the 1870s still stands near the corner of Main Street and present day Route 34, a physical reminder of his long association with the town’s development.
Through foresight and steady commitment, Almon Gage helped transform prairie into permanence. The very ground upon which Sandwich stands reflects his early confidence in its future.
